FIRST LEGO League Kickoff Events

WIth each new FLL season Illinois FIRST Robotics organizes one or more kickoff events around the state to give teams an introduction to fun and excitement ahead.  This year is no different, and below is what we have planned thus far.  Please return to this page often to see if there is an event coming to your area.


Northern Illinois Kickoff for City Shaper Season: 

When:  Saturday, September 7, 2019

Where:   Rotolo Middle School, 1501 S Raddant Rd., Batavia IL 60510

Workshop-style event for teams of all experience levels.  CITY SHAPER sessions on Sustainability, Design, City Systems and more!   Topics include: Judging Changes, Robot Game, Finding Experts, Quality Solutions, Team Dynamics, Setting Goals, Programming, Building for Robots, Strategy and More!

Rockford Kickoff for City Shaper Season: 

When:  Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Where:  Rockford Christian Middle & High School (1401 N. Bell School Road, Rockford)

Cost:  FREE

Quad Cities Kickoff for City Shaper Season: 

When:  Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 8:30 am - 12:45 pm

Where:   John Deere World Headquarters in Moline

On behalf of John Deere & the Quad City Engineering & Science Council, I'm happy to invite your FIRST LEGO League team to the 7th Annual Quad Cities FIRST LEGO League Season Kickoff!!  With John Deere as a new global program sponsor for FIRST LEGO League CITY SHAPER season, the kickoff will be held at the John Deere World Headquarters in Moline.  Please note a FIRST LEGO League Junior Kickoff will also be held in parallel.   For further information, follow this link

The kickoff will provide a fun, interactive way to meet other teams, learn together and share key FIRST LEGO League information.  This includes opportunities to talk with Innovation Project Challenge experts about buildings and public spaces in your community.  In addition, you can learn from experienced FIRST LEGO League judges and referees about the new CITY SHAPER field setup.  Several returning FIRST LEGO League teams will be on hand to share their State Championship and/or FIRST World Championship experiences.

For further information on the event, including how to pre-register your team, use this link to the event webpage.  With limited space available, teams MUST PRE-REGISTER AHEAD OF THE EVENT.  Consider registering early to ensure your team can participate.  the event webpage will continue to be updated as we finalize the remaining breakouts, displays, keynote speakers and a list of registered teams.

Students attending the event must be accompanied by a coach and/or chaperone (cannot be dropped off alone).  A SIGNED QCESC CONSENT FORM must be provided at check-in for all attendees including teams (students, coaches, mentors and chaperones).  See this link  For students who are minors (less that 18 years old), the consent form must be signed by one parent or guardian.  Teams may attend the event, even if only a portion of the team can come.  

If you know anyone interested in supporting the event as a volunteer, please have them apply using this link  No previous experience is required for most volunteer roles.  


Chicago Kickoff for City Shaper Season: 

When:  Sunday, September 15, 2019 from 9:00 am - 12:00pm

Foreman is the first CEO of the Emerald South Economic Development Collaborative; the group that works to develop and support South Side communities through a focus on commercial-corridor expansion, sustainable housing, and workforce development. Prior to joining Emerald South, he was the Executive Director of Greater Southwest Development Corporation (GSDC), a CDC focused on the improvement of the Southwest Side of Chicago.

Foreman was the Managing Partner of Maktub Development, a real estate development firm focused on inner city development. In this capacity, Ghian was responsible for $30 million in investments and development in traditionally under-served urban markets throughout the United States. Ghian also previously served as VP of Strategic Acquisitions at HSBC where he oversaw over $3 billion in acquisitions.

Foreman sits on several boards including serving as President of the Chicago Police Board and member of the Rebuild Foundation. He earned his BS from Florida A&M University, and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He lives in Kenwood with his wife Traci and daughter Jade.

FLL Development Day for City Shaper Season

When:  Saturday, September 28, 2019 from 1:00 pm - 4:00pm

Where:  SWIC campus, Liberal Arts Building in Belleville, IL

Coaches and mentors,

Southern Illinois FIRST has been hard at work to bring extra events to the area. We have a Development Day planned for your teams September 28th 1-4 PM. It will be held at SWIC in Belleville in their Liberal Arts Building.

We will have sessions on game strategy, core values, project, robot building, programming. All the basics your team needs for a successful season! There will be experienced mentors and coaches around to ask questions. There will also be graduates from FLL mentoring and leading these sessions. These students have a lot of knowledge and love working with FLL teams.

We are excited to bring this opportunity to you again this year. If you would like to attend please register by Friday September 20th. Cost will be $15. This can be paid via PayPal at or cash or check.
